LIFE LESSONS FROM A BALL AND A PIECE OF SANDPAPER

LIFE LESSONS FROM A BALL AND A PIECE OF SANDPAPER

EDIT : I wrote this in March 2018 - so chances are that some of the events mentioned here might not sound familiar to you ( Though, if you are interested in learning more about them, feel free to google )...

However, I would urge you to continue reading till the end as the message conveyed in the end is something that we all need to learn....

The first quarter of 2018 comes to a close - and personally from what I have observed, it has not been a great ride thus far for the world in general.

We witnessed one of the worlds biggest tech giants getting caught in what appears to be a serious controversy. Humanity went to its lowest point as the attacks on Syria literally tore the country apart. Noted banks in India found themselves in deep trouble as a series of scams are getting unearthed and with each scam getting unearthed, the question of "can this get anymore worse?" being answered with a loud yes. Seeing economy getting into a string of controversies, it seems cricket couldn't stop itself from the excitement and decided to jump in as well. A ball tampering controversy by the Australians - who are considered the gods of the game, brought the whole cricketing world to a standstill. With that controversy, we come to the end of the first quarter of 2018 (provided we don't run into any more scams/ shootings / ball tampering controversies )

With the Indian government today turning slowly into a literal synonym of the word scam in the oxford dictionary, let's forget the bank scams. Also, with enough having been talked about the refugees of Syria (especially in the social media in the form of memes), let us put that topic too to rest.

The thing that makes me go into a soul searching mode is the last point - what made the Australians, who are the literal gods of the game of cricket, stoop down to such a low-level act like ball tampering especially when they are aware of

1)How far technology has developed these days ( calculating their chances of not getting caught in the act ) and

2)The after effects if they are caught during the nasty gamble that they are about to play

what drove these people (considering the fact that players like Steve smith are some of the best products that the cricketing world has ever produced) to such a cheap act ?

Are they new to the game ? NO

Are they not aware of the rules of the game? Considering the numbers that these players have on their back, it is pretty safe to say that they should have by now been well versed with the rules of the gentleman's game.

Don't they know that an act like ball tampering is unethical?

YES they do!

Then what drove them to do it ?

The answer is DESPERATION.

In simple layman terms, Desperation is a state of mind where you run out of ideas on how to stop your losing streak in life.

And when your mind is desperate, it is focused on the problem - the continuous failure. It encompasses itself into an imaginary prison which limits it's ability to think in a sane manner.

So when you are desperate, you tend to do anything - literally anything that will help you stop the losing streak, no matter how unethical or out of bounds that 'thing' is.

And here is a simple truth:

DESPERATE TIMES DON'T CALL FOR DESPERATE MEASURES - THEY CALL FOR CALM, COMPOSED AND PROGRESSIVE ACTION

and that calm, composed and progressive action will slowly put you back on track.

So to summarize, here is what the first quarter of 2018, which comprised of bank scams, death of the list male white rhino, the darker side of technological advancement(in Syria) and the ball tampering scam taught me that I will be taking forward to face the remaining three quarters:

  • LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP - a moment of thought before you leap in is better than the 1000 sorry's that you have to offer after messing up.
  • THE MORE DESPERATE YOU GET, THE MORE CALMER YOU HAVE TO ACT - the last thing that you would want to do while going through a rough phase of life is to screw it up further by your own means. If you find yourself in a losing streak in life, understand that it will pass - all that you have to do is to hang in there.
  • IT IS NOT CALM BEFORE STORM. IT IS CALM DURING A STORM  - The more calmer you get, the more quicker you will get out of the storm.

DESPERATE MEASURES DURING DESPERATE TIMES LEAD TO DESPERATE RESULTS. A FAILURE IS NOT ONE WHO LOSES THE GAME BUT THE ONE WHO LOSES HIMSELF OR HIS CHARACTER WHILE TRYING TO WIN THE GAME.

On that note, I would like to wish you all a good rest-of-2019...hope the first 1/6th of it was awesome. If not, don't worry...you still have the rest of it left to make it awesome !
